MTM Motors

Mark Diton's and Terry Davidson's association with MTM Motors/Cumbers Garage spans over 40 years. They are now directors of the company, it's been an interesting journey. It all started while delivering newspapers to a flat located above the garage in Brixham back in 1981, when we were 14 years old. We plucked up the courage to ask the owner, Mike Lawrence, if he could use a couple of car cleaners on a Saturday morning. We agreed a fixed fee of £1 per car! We started the following Saturday. Before long, we were helping around the workshop which at that point was specialising in mechanical restoration of classic Volvo's. Once we reached school leaving age, we then attended South Devon College and studied Motor Vehicle Repair and gained our City and Guilds qualifications. The garage was then evolving into day-to-day service and repair as well as the restoration of Mike's every growing classic Volvo Collection, which at this point was one of the largest private collections in Europe, dating back to around 1938. We were both gaining so much experience and valuable knowledge, which unbeknown to us would be invaluable for our future business. We set up a classic Volvo spares company to run along side the workshop and we were both now running the businesses between us, with Mike overseeing the business side of the operation. 

Sadly in 1998, Mike Lawrence passed away. The classic restoration work began to tail off but, the service and repair was growing rapidly, and we had now ventured into Volvo car sales. In 2002 we built our own MOT Testing Bay and Valeting Bay. Our business was growing rapidly as was our reputation. In 2013 we made the decision to hand over the servicing sector of the business to our top technician John Thackray. Everything had grown, and we decided to concentrate more on car sales which proved to be the right decision. We now have customers whose children and grandchildren come to us.

That really brings us to the present day. We operate a fully equipped workshop, MOT bay and quality showroom all specialising in Volvo's using our years of experience and knowledge to serve our customers.

We would like to dedicate our success over the years to Mike Lawrence our former business partner but above all else our amazing friend. From our tender age of 14 Mike taught us "The Old-Fashioned Way" to run our business with values rarely seen today. In our early years without realising it, we were thumbing our way through a book of amazing business knowledge, integrity, and acumen. Mike always installed in us to 'Treat other people as you would wish to be treated'. That has become our business model over the years and is reflected in our 400 plus reviews on Auto Trader.
